Since introducing the Tru-Test weigh system and load bars, Lewis has used accurate weighing data across both units to monitor youngstock performance and make more informed decisions around feeding, growth rates and herd management. 

"Identifying underperforming animals, or those with early onset subclinical diseases, allows us to segregate animals that aren't meeting the desired daily live weight gain (DLWG). We can then focus on supplementary feeding the group that requires it, rather than feeding the whole mob," says Lewis.

Previously, Lewis fed all dairy heifers as one group. By weighing them with the Tru-Test system, he can now identify those needing additional nutrition, helping reduce feed costs while maintaining target growth rates. 

"Last year, we had a high number of dairy heifers, putting us in a fortunate position to select those we wanted to retain as replacements and sell the surplus. By analysing the data collected through weighing, I was able to identify the heifers that convert grass to growth most efficiently, giving us confidence that they will go on to convert grass into milk cost effectively."
